I really enjoyed this well written chinese police procedural. The characters are very engaging and the story is original. The setting in southern China early 1000s very interesting and different. I am very hopeful this author will quickly deliver up another!
I’m not sure why there aren’t more people reading this book but I devour historical mysteries at about a 2-3 a week and this ranks as among the better ones.
Five stars for the fleshed-out characters, the twists and turns of plot. The city jumps at you from the authors detailed descriptions of everyday life. The good minds working to make sense of senseless death. Excellent research to describe the China of many centuries ago. Reminds me of some of Pearl S. Bucks descriptions of China. I do not usually write reviews; this book really intrigued me. Please, do read. To the author WE ARE WAITING FOR THE SEQUEL!?

I took this book away on holidays with me, and really enjoyed it.
It's a great page-turner, full of really engaging characters, and written in a really interesting time in history. It's well-written, easy-to-read, lots of suspense - a great way to spend a beach holiday!

Love mysteries set in the Orient, any time period. This was unusual but good.
This period of Chinese history (11th century) has been well-researched by the author, and is presented in a lively and readable way.The Forensics of that period are an integral part of the plot, making this thriller a kind of ancient Chinese Murdoch Mysteries.
However, with its beautiful use of language, I would place this book not as your average who-dunnit, but as a literary mystery novel.
